Soledad O’Brien father Edward was an Australian of Irish descent and a mechanical engineering professor. Soledad O’Brien mother is Afro-Cuban and a French and English teacher. She graduated from Smithtown High School East in 1984. She attended Harvard from 1984 to 1988 but she did not obtain a degree until she returned in 2000. O’Brien continued to act as a reporter for CNN. She’s won awards for her contribution to news. Soledad received the NAACP President Award in 2007. She was named the Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Journalists in 2010.
Soledad is a mother of four and she started her career with WBZ TV as an associate producer and news writer. Soledad then joined NBC in 1991 where she took the role as field producer for programs The Nightly News and Today. She went on to act as an area reporter for NBC’s KRON in San Francisco. While at NBC, the mother of four anchored the Weekend morning show and The Site, an award winning technology show. She co-anchored numerous shows including Weekend Today with David Bloom, Today Show and the weekend model of the Nightly News. She moved to CNN in 2003 where she co-host the morning show American Morning with Miles O’Brien but they’re not related. She was replaced with a younger model Kiran Chetry due to poor ratings. Miles was also axed from the show.
Despite her accomplishments, Soledad was also known for her great mishaps. She was greatly criticized in 2008, especially by FastCheck.org, for her coverage through the McCain/Palin campaign for falsely reporting that Sarah Palin had cut the education budget by 62 per cent where in fact Palin had raised the budget.
